Perkins Engines Company Ltd was founded in 1932 in Peterborough, England by Frank Perkins and has grown into one of the world's leading off-highway diesel engine manufacturers, producing tens of millions of engines for industrial, agricultural, construction, materials-handling and power-generation use. The company was acquired by Caterpillar Inc. in 1998 and now operates as a wholly owned Caterpillar subsidiary, giving it global manufacturing and a worldwide parts-and-service footprint. Perkins built its reputation on classics such as the 6.354 (over a million units made between 1960 and 1996) and today organises its compact-to-mid lineup into clearly defined families - the 0.5-2.2 litre 400 Series, the 2.8/3.6 litre 900/904 Series, and the 4.4-7.1 litre 1100 and 1200 Series - reaching up through larger 1700, 2000, 2200, 2400, 2500, 2600 and 2800/4000 Series units. Engine technology spans naturally aspirated and turbocharged (and turbocharged-aftercooled/charge-cooled) configurations, mechanical indirect-injection on the smallest models and electronically controlled high-pressure common-rail fuel systems on the rest. The current 'J' generation meets EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final using a DOC + DPF aftertreatment package, with SCR added on the larger 1206J, delivering significant gains in power density and torque over previous generations while a modular design keeps installation footprints and OEM development costs down.
