Isuzu Motors Limited traces its roots to 1916 in Tokyo and is one of the oldest and most respected names in diesel engineering, having built diesel engines since the 1930s. The company adopted the Isuzu name (after Japan's Isuzu River) in 1949 and has since grown into one of the largest producers of medium-duty and industrial diesel engines in the world, with cumulative output measured in the tens of millions of units. Its industrial off-highway division offers more than 30 engine models covering roughly 8.8 kW to 382 kW for generators, construction machinery, agricultural equipment, forklifts, pumps and compressors. Technically, the modern lineup is built around proven engine families - the compact L-series (4LE2), the J-series (4JG, 4JJ1), the H-series (4HK1, 6HK1) and larger B/W-series (6BG1, 6WG1) - using four-stroke, water-cooled, vertical in-line architecture with cast-iron blocks for durability. Smaller legacy units use direct or indirect injection and natural aspiration, while the current generation employs electronically controlled high-pressure common-rail injection, variable-geometry (VNT) turbocharging and air-to-air charge-air cooling. To meet stringent emissions limits such as US EPA Tier 4 Final, Stage IIIA and Euro V/Stage V, Isuzu combines cooled EGR with after-treatment including diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), with several Tier 4 ratings achieved without a DPF.
