Kubota traces its roots to 1890, when 19-year-old Gonshiro Ohde (later Gonshiro Kubota) founded Ohde Casting in Osaka, Japan, initially producing castings for weighing equipment and everyday goods. The company built its first engine in 1923, the 3-horsepower agricultural and industrial "Type A," and by the late 1920s was producing engines for fishing boats. Over the following century Kubota grew into a global industrial group spanning tractors, combine harvesters, construction equipment, water and environmental systems, and a dedicated Engine Division that is today one of the world's largest manufacturers of compact off-highway diesel engines under roughly 100 kW (with the V5009 extending the range past 200 hp). Kubota engines are predominantly vertical, water-cooled, four-cycle units offered with a choice of fuel systems — indirect injection (IDI), direct injection (DI) and electronically controlled common-rail (CR) — and span single-cylinder to four-cylinder layouts in naturally aspirated, turbocharged and turbo-aftercooled forms. To meet the world's toughest emissions standards (EPA/CARB Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, China NR IV, India BS V), Kubota integrates aftertreatment such as Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), plus EGR, while engineering long ash-cleaning and oil-change intervals to keep maintenance and operating costs low. The 2019 launch of the V5009 — Kubota's first engine above 200 hp, which won Diesel of the Year — marked the brand's move into higher-power industrial territory while retaining its trademark compactness and reliability.
