On South African demolition sites, sorting grapples are used to separate mixed demolition rubble into clean concrete (for crushing), steel (for scrap), timber and general waste — a sorting process required before materials can be recycled or disposed of at licensed waste facilities. Manual sorting of demolition rubble is slow, costly and presents significant safety risks to workers. A sorting grapple mounted on an excavator performs this task mechanically, in a fraction of the time.
Waste sorting facilities and transfer stations use sorting grapples to feed material onto conveyors, stack sorted waste and load containers. The grapple's ability to pick up irregular, lightweight material — plastic, cardboard, vegetation, rubble — that a conventional bucket would scatter makes it the preferred tool for waste-handling applications.
MB Crusher sorting grapples (the MB-G range) rotate 360 degrees, allowing the excavator operator to grip, orient and place material with full rotational freedom without repositioning the machine. Clamping pressure is controlled via the excavator's auxiliary hydraulic circuit and is adjustable to handle both delicate and heavy materials.
